Infancy and childhood are the most critical time periods in a person’s life to receive chiropractic adjustments. This is because birth is one of the most traumatic experiences our bodies ever undergo. During the birth process, there is an incredible amount of pressure placed on the delicate spine and nervous system (regardless of whether the baby passes naturally through the birth canal or is born via C-section). Additionally, if any interventions such as forceps or suction are used during the birthing process, the stress put on a baby’s spine and nervous system is even greater.
Spinal and/or cranial misalignment can often be the cause of, or contribute to, many newborn and childhood health complaints such as colic, breastfeeding difficulties, allergies, bedwetting, constipation, sleeping disturbances, ear infections, failure to thrive, and other problems. Since significant spinal trauma can occur at or prior to birth, many parents often choose to have their newborns’ spines checked right after birth. As a child progresses through developmental milestones, such as learning to hold up the head, sitting unsupported, crawling, and walking, proper spinal alignment is critical, so it’s especially important for your child to be seen by an experienced pediatric chiropractor during the first few formative years.
